New Cascade is a city built in and around nature. The majority of structures completed during and after the expansion era all feature green features such as solar arrays, atriums, outdoor gardens, and water recycling facilities.
The greatest example of this technology is the Mother Atrium. A large facility with massive systems housing stabilized versions of all of Jaladri's biomes.
The Mother Atrium is unique because it was the first structure separate from a city ship to be finished and opened. Many native Jaladri citizens have strong memories of field trips here as kids, or having a picnic with their families here.
The facility is also used to study the viability of Jaladrian flora and fauna on Earth.

The weather on Jaladri ranges from sub-tropical to temperate and oceanic. Air conditioning is a necessity not because of heat so much as moisture content. It can be so complete sometimes that there are multiple species of hanging plants that have evolved to live on trees, structures, or anything tall where they can anchor themselves.
Even in areas where rain does not reach their leaves, they are able to thrive because of the moisture content in the air.
During the Expansion Era, all air conditioning facilities were mandated to be primarily solar powered, using electric motors to power collection units and condensers. This coupled with the living gardens in many buildings work in tandem to regulate the humidity and temperature of buildings.

Light Between Structures was the name of an architectural design installation in New Cascade that gave way to an entirely new design language for buildings and infrastructure. Jaladri lies within a small visual binary star system. Its main sun star, Kinzie, is smaller than Earth's, but similar in its luminance.
The second star, Vicars, is much smaller. It appears in the sky as a deep amber during the day, and as a small red orb at sunset and sunrise. Vicars also sets an hour after Kinzie, and is in a different location in the sky.
Light Between Structures was created to illustrate the different ways the light from both stars interacts with natural and manmade formations on-world.
-
Many of the indoor biomes on Jaladri are constructed to be incredibly tall. Some of them are recessed into the ground 80-100 feet deep, with the same distance above ground. This technique is used to take advantage of temperature differences.
If one were to enter on the ground floor and look up, they would be fooled by the false "sky" within the structure. Some of the larger facilities create their own weather patterns.
-
Some of the most vast and interconnected facilities in both New Cascade and Port Worden are underground. These provide access to water purifiers and natural tapped wells, atmospheric controls, maintenance facilities, fiber optic hubs and more.
WIthin this network are employee apartments, small stores and vendmats, as well as medical facilities. Both cities were built on top of, or near, vast lava caves that provide solid support for massive structures, and kept a lot of intrusive buildings away from delicate natural biomes so as to not disturb areas with extensive natural growth.

At some point in Jaladri’s prehistoric past, vast portions of a very specific type of rock were flash-melted by volcanic activity; at high temperatures, this rock turns into a molten glass.
If this happens near or under water, the glass turns a deep transparent golden purple called Emperor’s Purple. All along the western coast of Reitoru, massive deposits of this glass have been formed and then ground against the rocky coast by the massive power of the ocean.
Over hundreds of years different pieces wash up along the shores. Sometimes they are polished like river stones, and sometimes they form complex shapes similar to bismuth.
There is quite a following and interest in Emperor's Purple. It can be used for art, scientific and mechanical applications, and as a building material. The Sea Glass Expo is a convention for all things related to this mystical substance, as well as many other treasures found on the coasts of Jaladri.

Planetary Hydration is the name of a Promotional Campaign ran on both Jaladri and Earth. After the discovery of Lake Green’s renewing possibilities for Earth’s ailing ecosystems, these comforting, hopeful posters, adverts, and public art projects helped to keep humanity feeling connected while Earth waited for the first shipments to arrive.
During this time, advancements in mission time between planets were made, so subsequent deliveries took less than half the amount of time—around 500 days per round trip.

In the southeast of New Cascade is The Ceramic District. This is a historical name, as this is where parts for ship engines and smaller engines were made out of ceramic in the early years after first landing. This district houses the majority of larger buildings and dense city center, "downtown" aesthetics.
With tolerances exceeding boron carbide, ceramics produced on Jaladri are unmatched for any application.
After production became printer-based, operations were downsized and the entire area began to be repurposed. Many of the older buildings were preserved and updated.

Due to Jaladri’s Visual Binary System, on foggy mornings during the Dark Seasons, if you wake up early enough, you will witness The Blush Fog.
Light seeming to come from the horizon and flashing horizontally across the sky lights up the marine layer in a brilliant hue of Coral Blush. Some might say it rivals Earth’s Aurora Borealis in spectacle.

During the first 2 decades after First Landing, all water on-world was procured from natural wells and aquifers located within and beneath the bed of lava rock conglomerate.
Pristine water filtered by immense pressure and porous material, boasting a peculiar and intriguing mineral taste profile. After realizing how slow these sources were to naturally replenish, research into large scale rainwater collection began.
We knew that it rained a lot on Jaladri, but until we arrived, we did know how often or the volume. The answer was all the time, and more than we could use.
99.65% of all municipal water comes from rain water collection. Waste Water is sterilized, filtered, and used for industrial applications.
